The purpose of this aid is to equip eligible base stations (BTSs) with fibre-based backhaul connections. The deployment of fibre-based backhaul connections should facilitate the provision of performant new mobile services and applications including those enabled by 5G technology (e.g. smart & connected vehicles). By equipping base stations (BTSs) in “target areas” (i.e., municipalities of less than 10 thousand inhabitants) with fibre-based backhaul connections, the aid is expected to contribute to the achievement of the European Union's digital policy objectives and the 2025 Digital Spain Agenda, which targets 100% of the population covered with at least 100 Mbps by 2025. Furthermore, the scheme aims to accelerate the deployment of 5G services and infrastructure, reaching a 75% coverage of the population by 31 December 2025, and helping to reduce de “digital divide” in Spain.
