According to the broadband strategy formulated by the Austrian Federal Government, the availability of high-speed broadband in Austria is to be achieved almost universally by 2020. The specific objective of the 2020 Broadband Strategy of 2012 is to provide ultra-fast high-speed broadband access, i.e. at least 100 Mbps: (i) by 2018 in the metropolitan areas (70% of households) and, (ii) almost universal coverage of the population by 2020. Under the 2020 Broadband Strategy, three major infrastructure programmes will be implemented, and they will be supported by an application support programme a recently launched connectivity support programme Broadband Austria 2020 Connect.
