The ‘Italian 5G Plan’, under the State Aid case SA.100557, has an overall budget of approximately 2 billion euros in the period June 2022 to June 2026. The State aid scheme consists of two interventions. The first intervention involves the development of fibre-optic backhaul networks to connect the existing base stations (“BTSs”), for more than 10,000 existing mobile radio sites, in order to improve the performance of 5G networks. The second one consists in the densification of the network infrastructure through the construction of new 5G mobile radio sites in more than 2,000 areas of the country, in order to extend 5G coverage to all parts of the national territory.
